Are Birds Causing You Problems?

Birds such as feral Pigeons, Starlings and Seagulls can be significant pests. Birds of these species and their fouling is known to often carry harmful organisms such as Salmonellosis, Cryptococcosis neoformans, Histoplasmosis, Psittacosis and Ornithosis.

Wet excreta can also pose a significant slip hazard. Apart from looking very unsightly, many insect pests are strongly associated with bird fouling. These include; House Flies, Bird Mites and Fleas, House Moths, Carpet and Larder Beetles, Spider Beetle and Biscuit and Mealworm Beetles.

The presence of birds can therefore cause secondary insect problems within buildings. Allpest Services can treat any insect problems at the same time as installing a suitable Bird Repellent System to remove the birds.

All Pest Services are specialists in removing bird fouling and have over 15 years experience in the installation of bird repellent systems and the carrying out of bird management programmes.

Simply sealing up holes to fascia boards and soffits can prevent access by nuisance birds, although care must be taken not to trap birds inside. Depending upon the species, these non-harmful alternatives include our Bird Net, Bird Spike and Bird Wire systems.

Answer

Causing harm to any species, whether bird or otherwise, is a last resort. In most cases bird control can be achieved to a high degree without having to resort to lethal methods. The aim is simply to move them from a location where they are causing a problem to one where they won’t. A variety of techniques are available, depending upon species, which we can advise you on.

Answer

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1991 is the principal piece of legislation affecting bird control. The basic principle of the legislation is that all wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected. However there are a number of exceptions which allow authorised persons, such as pest controllers, to control certain species under licence in certain circumstances using specific approved methods. We can advise you on all these aspects of bird control. Care must be taken to ensure the bird species is correctly identified before any work is undertaken.
